sometimes….don’t.

I know I know. You all missed me soooo much. This is the longest I’ve gone without posting in quite some time. I have been working non-stop since Thursday and can’t post any photos of all the editorial work I have been doing till the issues come out. Anyway, I’m finally taking a break from all that to give a little update on life and all that jazz. Honestly though, work has taken up most of my time. As a side note, and this is a complete generalization….but, people really need to calm down. There is too much pressure put on everything, and not enough energy spent on enjoying life. Hippie enough for you?

Trina and I have been going to the dog park every morning, and it really has had an incredibly positive effect on her. Despite my exhaustion in the early morning, her and I have such a good time together. She is making doggie friends and never really gets tired of playing. It’s adorable. I have been hanging out with this guy Luis who is amazing, and actually owns the organic shop across the street from the dog park. So i always have a breakfast of champions. I was actually shooting across from the dog park for Time Out NY this morning, which was incredibly convenient.

One thing that is kind of a pet peeve of mine, and this may sound obnoxious, is when people randomly start talking to me about insignificant things. 99% of the time, it’s conversation I don’t want to have. Mind you, I’m incredibly friendly when it comes to everyday interactions….but honestly, I dont want to talk about my hair, my dog, my tattoos, my camera, if I’m really a new yorker, what video game I’m playing on my ds, or what I’m listening to on my IPOD with a random stranger when in the middle of doing something. Within the last 2 days, I’ve been asked twice when I have Texas tattooed on my arm (which I dont), if I’d like to “hang out” at night with this very young couple who were very very high, and why are my shorts so short. It’s just unnecessary conversation, especially when I’m busy shooting on location and stressing about deadlines. Just like Wanda Sykes said in her comedy special -” I love that people feel like they can talk to me, but sometimes, dont”.

I really really love doing go-sees. It’s a nice quick interaction and I always get at least one image that I really love. I also like to have a model I have met before and know how they work in front of a camera when doing any job that requires a model. It just makes things flow a lot better. Andrew was really a special guy. His features are incredible, he had a great personality and appreciated my faggoty ass mix that I play when I photograph in my studio. That’s always a plus in my book.

p.s. Movie Time - Tropic Thunder, by far, the best movie I have seen all summer. I could not stop laughing and even that actors that can usually be kind of one trick ponies (Jack Black and Ben Stiller) were phenomenal. Robert Downey JR. can do no wrong, obviously. Tom Cruise was genius and I was totally surprised to see one of my favorite dream-boats matthew mcconaughey. This may have been one of the first movies where he didn’t take his shirt off.
American Teen, however, not so good. I was really looking forward to this documentary and actually wanted to see it when I was in Sundance. It was just way way to contrived for me, and had terrible animated sequences in it that were a total turn off. There was just something about it that rubbed me the wrong way, and it wasn’t the fact that it was about high-school (not the best time of my life personally, or anyones rather). However, the redeeming part of the film was that the soundtrack was pretty great, and while not a big fan of MGMT, the song Kids plays during the credits and that song is just awesome.

p.p.s TV Time - Weeds - Another week passed, another really well written episode. When Elizabeth Perkins has her intervention, I pretty much pee’d myself. I feel like there are only a few episodes left and this season went by way too fast. Way too fast.
In Plain Sight - Finale already…. quickest summer show ever. There definitely weren’t enough episodes…. I could have watched that show all year. I’m hoping they bring the next season on sooner than June. I’m just saying, the next season needs to happen like tomorrow.
The Closer - The dynamics between Brenda and Fritz are really great this season. It’s kind of an undertone for each episode and not fully addressed but I think something really big is going to happen between the two of them. Kyra Sedgwick is really out-doing herself this season and proving to me why she is still one of my favorite female actresses.

So was that long-winded enough for you all? I’m working on only a few hours of sleep from the last couple of days so I need a tad bit of slack. I’m sure I’m not making the most comprehensible sentences. After this weekend, I expect things to be slightly back to normal.

Jennifer Loeber is an outstanding photographer. I really appreciate anyone that can accomplish something new and exciting with portraits that involve nudity. The above portrait is one of my favorites. Her whole site is worth a look, as always. So please check it out.

Sorry I haven’t been as diligent updating this week….I’ve been quite busy with work, and figuring out future jobs. I’m in need of a getaway from New York and have been thinking of going to Cape Cod or Newport. I love being by the water, on a boat and enjoying the fresh air. It must be the sagittarius in me…we are supposed to love the outdoors. I actually have been at my computer a lot, working on images for the Observer and WWD. To break things up I’ve been working on some old scans as usual. Chad is still my favorite person I have ever photographed… we only shot for like two hours, but I have tons of images of him that I love.

Went to the opening at Bond Street Gallery, where many a friend and colleague where around. Amani Olu, Amy Stein and Jon Feinstein all curated parts of the show. It was nice, I always like a sense of comradery in the photography community. However, openings are always too crowded and intense for me to stay very long…. don’t do so well at super social gatherings personally.

Have a shoot this evening for Details, which should be super fun. Lesley Martin is finally being shot by me tomorrow…as last weekend I felt sort of ill. Other than that, I will probably relax a bit with Trina and get my bearings together for another week of sending out emails and promotional material. Shooting for Time Out NY at some point next week as well. Hoping to see Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express this weekend as I haven’t gone to the movies since Mamma Mia!

Home in the valley
Home in the city
Home isn’t pretty
Ain’t no home for me
Home in the darkness
Home on the highway
Home isn’t my way
Home will never be
Burn out the day
Burn out the night
I can’t see no reason to put up a fight
I’m living for giving the devil his due
And I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning for you
I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning for you
Time is the essence
Time is the season
Time ain’t no reason
Got no time to slow
Time everlasting
Time to play besides
Time ain’t on my side
Time I’ll never know
Burn out the day
Burn out the night
I’m not the one to tell you what’s wrong or what’s right
I’ve seen signs of what (freezing their eyes) went through
Well I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning for you
I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning for you
Burn out the day
Burn out the night
I can’t see no reason to put up a fight
I’m living for giving the devil his due
And I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning for you

I’m completely open and honest about my life. Professional and personal…In the age we are living in, a blog seems like the appropriate thing to communicate freely with the people who are interested in my work. The way I feel about who I photograph, the jobs I do, the relationships in my life…. it is all a part of my experience. Having an outlet to write about all of that seems like the perfect counter-part to my portfolio site. There are things I post here that I would never show anywhere else, but they are still fragments of something that existed in my life for the day or moment. Sometimes, being so honest, can have a negative effect. I just take the days one day at a time. I want to be happy with who I am and what I do. Even though photography is my “full-time job”, it isn’t a job to me because I love doing it so much. Even assignments I’m not thrilled to do are experiences that I end up remembering and learning from. I appreciate every opportunity that is given to me, and embrace it. I love a good rambling.

Despite some emotional upheaval, I had an enjoyable day. Photographed this morning for the Observer. Luckily the thunderstorms stopped just in time for some rooftop photographs. Afterwards Allison, Joshua and I went and got some brunch…where I ate pretty much the biggest plate of carbs ever. My diet sometimes is the complete opposite of the Atkins diet….unintentionally that is. Allison and I then proceeded to make a surprise for Alfie, it’s pretty amazing and I’ll talk about it once she finds out what it is.

Also, as a quick side-note, I have been hanging out with a pretty amazing person. I’m not going to go into detail just yet, but it has really brightened me up a bit. I saw PJ tonight as well, and he is probably the most blunt, honest and funny man I have encountered. He’s just a really great guy. Just saying.

p.s. In Plain Sight only has one more episode…. I’d probably be sadder than I am about it, but luckily the fall season of shows is starting soon anyway to keep me occupied during my late night editing sessions. The finale looks like it’s going to be incredible. Also, I totally swallowed my pride and went and saw Mamma Mia! with Heather. I really just wanted to see Meryl Streep sing… and man was it worth it. So completely entertaining that I almost want to see it again. Meryl can do no wrong in my eyes.

quarter-life crisis.

I feel like such a grandpa lately. Everything is bothering me, and I’m not really saying it out-loud to anyone. Not really sure what it is, but I’m hoping my mind gets over whatever is going on. I also feel like I’ve been too much of a push-over lately, and need to start holding my ground. I’ve also been having very very bizarre dreams lately, and I wake up not sure if they happened in real life. Anyway….so is life.

I ran into Billy last night on the train. He looked great as always… I haven’t seen him in a few months and was pleased to find out he lives a few blocks away. I’d like to shoot him for something soon, but I really haven’t been doing any fashion at all. It also looks like I’ll be shooting for the London Observer, as soon as next week, which is rather exciting. Makes me miss London times and last summer. I really had such a wonderful time there.

p.s. Bruce had been telling me he was listening to Frightened Rabbit, and I finally gave it a listen. Definitely my new album for the rest of the summer. Although it’s not very uplifting, it’s a really good listen.

I photographed Amani Olu about a month back… yet just got to working on the negatives. It seems the more people I photograph for Edited, the more I enjoy each new subject. Amani curates for Humble Arts and is also re-inventing the Bond Street Gallery in Brooklyn. He is really doing some great things. Humble Arts is also putting a book out on emerging photographers which I will be in. Anyway, I think his portrait is really wonderful, and a nice contrast to the other indoor locations.

Was scanning this evening and got to go through some film of Colin. I keep having new favorites. I do these head portraits like clock-work now, yet still don’t know what I will ever do with them. I just really like examining peoples faces close up…with no distractions. I also love the green with his freckles and hair, it’s kind of perfect.

I’m loving that Nicolette is finally living with me. We are total girlfriends, and living together is working incredibly. Her boobs are officially our third roommate as they take up more room that I do. I really want to make this apt a home, as after living here for so long, it still seems very sterile. One of the issues is having the studio where I live, but it just works for me logistically. But, I think we can do something about it.

p.s. Weeds again tonight. This season is incredible… Elizabeth Perkins is stealing the show in my mind. Her versatility is amazing and is genius comedically. I love that Julie Bowen is on the show now too as Hunter Parrish’s love interest. I loved her on Boston Legal, and am happy to see her in a show again. Hunter is lucky to have make-out and sex scenes with her. Totally jealous.

p.p.s. I can’t stop listening to Blue Oyster Cult….I watched 12 And Holding the other day for the first time since seeing it in theaters. If you haven’t seen it, netflix it immediately. There is a scene, that involves a recital and Blue Oyster Cult that is incredible.

a long time coming.

Another weekend passed. Where does time go. I got food poisoning or a 24 hour stomach thing last night, which has made me feel sort of ill all day. Worked on some negatives, played a bunch of video games, and hung out with Trina outside. You know, the usual daily routine.

My father finally sold his house. I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I know he needs to go live with my mom, as she needs health insurance and love. She is very lonely in Arizona. Although, I myself will miss him dearly. We have really only started a relationship these last few years, so it will be sad that he won’t be close to me distance wise anymore. Anyway, he will be leaving around September 1st. So, I’ll get in as much time as possible until then.

p.s. I finally got around to watching Savage Grace. Really a brilliant film, and I wish I saw it at Sundance like I wanted to. But nonetheless, I’ve finally seen it and was very impressed. Julianne Moore is wondeful as always.

p.p.s I started watching Meadowlands (Cape Wrath), which is really quite great. I got very excited to see that Harry Treadaway is in it. Him and his twin brother, Luke Treadaway are amazing. I’d love to photograph either of them. Harry is doing more films than Luke and even though they are twins, I find Luke more attractive. I’m sure photographing one or both of them will eventually happen.

Rachel Barrett is an incredible incredible photographer. She also went to SVA and was one of the students I TA’d for. Anyway, she was recently written about in the New York Times and just has an extraordinary eye. There are some photographers where you can just tell they are really looking. You don’t even need an explanation, the work just is. She is one of them. Check her stuff out.
